Photo Restorations

Old photographs often carry scratches, dust, yellowing, fading, folded corners, stains, and weak contrast. Restoration work gently clears the view without erasing the character of the original memory.

The best starting point is the highest quality scan or photograph available. Keep the original safe, avoid extra handling, and send a clean copy for review.

Gentle cleanup

Dust, specks, cracks, small scratches, stains, and edge wear can often be reduced while preserving the natural age of the photograph.

Tone and detail

Contrast, brightness, faded sepia, flat shadows, and weak faces can be balanced so the subject reads more clearly on screen or in print.

Ready for keepsakes

Restored images may become framed family pieces, gifts, reference images for hand painting, or poster print candidates.

Each example below shows a web-ready before copy beside a cleaned after copy. The work shown includes scan preparation, dust and scratch reduction, tone balancing, detail recovery, and final web export.

Child Portrait Cleanup

Before restoration - child studio portrait with age marks, fading, blue ink marks, soft contrast, and worn paper texture.
Before
After restoration - child studio portrait with cleaner monochrome tone, improved contrast, reduced marks, and clearer facial detail.
After

A narrow black and white keepsake portrait was prepared for clearer viewing while preserving the original studio pose and aged character.

Documented process

  1. Converted the uploaded scan into a web-safe JPEG before copy.
  2. Reduced spot marks and paper noise without reshaping the subject.
  3. Balanced the faded gray range so the face, hair, dress, shoes, and background read more clearly.
  4. Applied light sharpening and exported the after copy at matching dimensions for side-by-side comparison.

Children Studio Rail Cleanup

Before restoration - two children in a damaged studio photograph with cracks, staining, fading, and heavy print wear.
Before
After restoration - two children in a cleaner studio photograph with softened cracks, improved tone, and better subject separation.
After

This heavily worn image was stabilized for presentation by reducing surface damage and improving the visibility of the children and studio rail.

Documented process

  1. Created a resized web before copy from the large bitmap scan.
  2. Mapped visible cracks, white flakes, and dust marks for controlled cleanup.
  3. Reduced stain dominance and restored a warmer, more even sepia range.
  4. Sharpened only enough to improve viewing while leaving historical texture intact.

Three Sisters Portrait Cleanup

Before restoration - three girls in an aged portrait with scratches, specks, creases, faded tone, and damaged edges.
Before
After restoration - three girls in a cleaner portrait with reduced specks, stronger tonal balance, and improved clothing detail.
After

The group portrait was prepared to show better faces, dresses, floor detail, and background separation while keeping the old photograph appearance.

Documented process

  1. Converted the large bitmap into matching before and after web copies.
  2. Reduced bright flecks, surface scratches, and crease visibility across the print.
  3. Balanced the sepia tone so faces and clothing patterns stand out more evenly.
  4. Finished with light contrast and detail enhancement for website and print-review use.

Wedding Keepsake Cleanup

Before restoration - wedding portrait with faded sepia tone, scratches, paper wear, stains, and weakened contrast.
Before
After restoration - wedding portrait with clearer couple detail, cleaner tone, softened damage, and stronger formal portrait presence.
After

The wedding portrait was restored as a keepsake presentation sample with attention to faces, clothing, bouquet, floor, and backdrop tone.

Documented process

  1. Prepared a web before copy from the high-resolution source image.
  2. Reduced scratches, spots, and uneven aging without changing the pose.
  3. Improved contrast around the couple, bouquet, shoes, and studio background.
  4. Exported the after copy in the same size as the before copy for direct comparison.
